There are few things more frustrating than finding a tasty recipe online only to find that it calls for exotic ingredients that you can barely pronounce, let alone find at your local grocery store. Fortunately, this is not the case with HelloFresh, a meal delivery service that offers repeatable recipes that you can create using more common foods in the cabinets – just be sure to keep the handy recipe cards after you finish cooking.
The efficient yet fun cooking process, the delicious results, and the emphasis on including vegetables in every meal add to HelloFresh’s appeal, which is why it’s a contender for the title of best meal delivery service.

These groups are offered a selection of recipes to choose from, although we missed the option of choosing vegan or gluten-free meal kits.
Each serving we tried contained around 600-800 calories and around 30-40g of protein, which is similar to the amount you’ll find in some best protein powder. (If you’re wondering, “What is a calorie?” or “What are proteins?“, You can find the answers in our handy guides.)
Some of our in-house testers who train for more than an hour a day said they could have used a larger portion to make sure they were full, but most people will be happy with the portions. Read on for our full Hello Fresh review.
Hello Fresh review: rates and delivery
The HelloFresh website is easy to use and clearly structured, displaying all the information you need without feeling cluttered. If you choose to see which meals are available, you can choose the number of people you want to satisfy (two, three or four) and the number of recipes you want to receive each week (three, four or five). . You can also select whether you’d like it to display primarily meat, vegetable, family, quick cook, calorie smart, or pescetarian dishes, with the promise of “over 37 fresh recipes every week” to keep things interesting. Unfortunately, there are no labeled provisions for vegans or those wanting gluten-free options.
We opted for four vegetarian recipes to feed two people which, including shipping ($ 9.99), costs $ 85.91 (about $ 10.74 per serving)). While it is certainly possible to make a nutritious meal for a lower price, HelloFresh promises quality by saying that “work hard every day to … find quality ingredients for your best dinner”. You also save time, not only because the ingredients are already localized and dosed for you, but also because you don’t have to make your normal pilgrimage to the supermarket.
If the price still seems high to you, it is still worth a look at the site as there is often a selection of special offers and promotional codes available, with significant savings for first-time buyers and those who have been referred by a friend.
Hello Fresh review: using the meal delivery service
HelloFresh deliveries arrive in a large cardboard box, with each of the recipes enclosed in a numbered paper bag (these relate to relevant recipe cards, so you know which bag to tear into after choosing your meal). The only items not included in these bags are those that need refrigeration – these come in an insulated package along with several ice packs, to keep them cool.
Inside the bags, most of the ingredients are pre-dosed for you – a nice touch that ensured our culinary ventures didn’t go wrong and meant there was less waste as there was no half-finished food.
Portioning meals into paper bags made it incredibly easy to find ingredients, and this foolproof approach continued with recipe cards. Instructions are provided with explanatory pictures and clear explanations below, with no more than six steps for each recipe.
We found that we had been given enough autonomy to feel like we cooked for ourselves and made something, but using HelloFresh was definitely a lot easier than making a meal from scratch. There weren’t even any advanced cooking techniques, so we never felt out of our depths to boil, fry, and cook the ingredients.
Another factor we’re big fans of is the absence of unknown ingredients, with our vegetarian recipes instead featuring supermarket classics like beans, cheeses, puree and more common vegetables. Then, you can repeat the recipes of your own accord without much difficulty, just keep your recipe cards and recycle the instructions.
The approximate cooking times on the recipe cards were accurate, giving us a good idea of which meals we could have prepared in the time we had available and having the nutritional information (including calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, proteins and salt) per 100 g and the portion on the recipe card is useful for anyone who keeps track of their consumption.
Hello Fresh review: taste and nutrition
Given the simple ingredients and easy cooking experience, you’d be forgiven for any fear that the result might have a pretty plain flavor. However, let’s ease your worries by confirming that every recipe we made was packed with flavor.
A salad of beets, feta and walnuts gave the leafy dish a tasty twist, while the fried bean and mushroom tacos took less than 20 minutes, delivering a freshly made takeout experience. The results of our two-cheese ratatouille pasta cooking were rich and warm, and the Indonesian-style spiced tofu curry put store-bought sauces to shame with its impressive taste.
In our vegetarian meals, most servings provided around 30-40g of protein per serving, somehow answering the question “Do you need to eat meat to get protein?‘. When included in a more balanced, protein-rich diet, this is a good amount for an active person looking to build strength and muscle.
The tacos were slightly under 17.2g per serving, but can be paired with the salad as a “special side” to increase this figure by an additional 7.8g.
The number of calories per serving ranged from around 600-800, including tacos and the salad as a couplet. This will be adequate for most people, although those who lead particularly active lifestyles may require something more substantial.
We loved that each meal provided at least one of our five a day, with the vegetable-rich ratatouille boasting a whopping four servings of vegetables including zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes.
However, the omission of specific options for vegans or those who only want gluten-free options on the HelloFresh website seems like an oversight.
