Examining why George Patton, Bronco’s general manager, extended Russell Wilson so early

During the 2022 season, the Denver Broncos made headlines when they acquired Russell Wilson in a blockbuster trade.

Fast forward to just before the start of the 2022 season, when the Walton-Penner ownership group officially takes over. General Manager George Patton is finalizing a new contract extension for Wilson, giving him $165 million in guaranteed money and effectively tying QB to the Broncos through the 2025 season.

After eight games, Wilson had an overall disappointing season. Sometimes he made good plays, but he made a lot of bad plays, too. Part of it is down to training, but some of it is down to Wilson’s desire to run plays that don’t match his strengths.
